Catcher In My Pocket

The Mariners have announced they've signed their first round draft pick, catcher Jeff Clement, out of the University of Southern California.

The details of the contract have not been revealed. A press conference will be held today at 1 p.m. at Safeco Field.

I say assign him to the AquaSox today, then promote him to the big club to start tonight.

Yeah, that sounds about right.

  2. Now the "When the hell are the Mariners gonna sign this kid?" talk can finish. Gotta have patience, the most successful organizations build with a strong minor league system. That or $200 million dollars.

  3. USSMariner says he'll report to Everett. That's half of what I was hoping for. If they could just go ahead and let him take batting practice up there, and then helicopter him down to Safeco, that would be great.

  4. Yes Travis I got the Almost Live reference. I always like the Ballard Driving School sketch.

How long does it typically take a catching prospect to make it to the bigs?

  5. Longer than normal ones, because of the handling of pitchers aspect. However, Clement went to college, so that should speed it up significantly... I hope he's ready for '07. But that sounds ridiculously optimistic. I figure two or three years...or at least that's what I've read.

Oh man, I'm so excited about this game tonight. Pineiro on the mound - can you beat that?

  6. I had heard that the fastest way to the bigs is being a catcher but I have no facts to back this up. But take Rivera he made it pretty fast.

  7. Really? That's the opposite of what I heard. Let's do some reading.

What you say makes sense to me in a way...there are definitely fewer great catchers, making it a good position to specialize in. So with less competition, it seems like there would be a faster track.

Don't mind me, as I take baby steps to this realization.

Now, baby steps to my 10:42pm dinner.

p.s. I hate you Trav, for drawing the game summary for tonight's game. Did you see the shirtless guys in the outfield after Sexson's second homer? They had "SEXSON" spelled out on their chests, but only three of them were in the picture, so it spelled "SEX" instead. ...A hilarious moment in our household. We're easily amused.

    Cheers
